« Nous devons engager une bataille pour le niveau de notre école »

Gabriel Attal, Minister of National Education, at the Jean-Hinglo institute, in Le Port (Reunion), on August 17, 2023.

Two months after his arrival at the Ministry of National Education, Gabriel Attal gives a speech on the esplanade of the National Library of France, in front of an audience of 200 guests, as part of World Teachers' Day, Thursday, October 5. . This time, he specifies World the projects he wants to do, and he announces that he will launch them “mission” responsible for making proposals at all school levels “to increase the level of students”. The minister also presents ideas to improve the attractiveness of the teaching profession, considering that the priority is not to raise salaries.

At the beginning of the academic year, you announced a “knowledge shake” to raise the level of students. What exactly is it?

There is a need to raise the level of basic knowledge that determines success in all other disciplines, mathematics and French. Some data is eloquent. In 2018, a 4-year studente He had the rank of a 5th gradere from 1995 onwards. When entering the 6the, one out of three students cannot read correctly, one out of two cannot say how many quarter hours are in the “three quarters” part. Finally, 3e25% of patent candidates score less than 4/20 in math.

Since 2017 we have taken measures such as doubling key sections, CP and CE1 in priority education, which are already narrowing the gaps in reading and numeracy. We have launched a massive continuing education plan for our 370,000 math and French school teachers. The first results are there, but we still have to speed up and start fighting for the level of our school.

However, according to OECD surveys, we are one of the countries that spends the most time teaching these “basic skills”. So what else needs to be done?

In recent years, many works, opinions and parliamentary reports have been made on the subject. The base is there, and it's solid. So I launch a “requirement of knowledge” mission to make this work a reality and move forward. It will be about schools, middle schools and lyceums, and it will bring together teachers, chancellors, academy inspectors and general inspectors of national education who know the local reality better than anyone else. Proposals will be returned to me within eight weeks for initial implementation from September 2024. I hope that the first to be interviewed will be the unions that represent the teachers. All teachers will also participate: next week, we will launch a consultation for all our 860,000 teachers, regarding the priorities and actions to be implemented to raise the level.
